Abstract Scope Microstructural engineering of samples produced by additive manufacturing (AM) is challenging but opens new arenas for property and performance optimization. Much work has been done to enable printing of almost fully dense samples and components without too severe internal stress. Further advances thus require careful experimental characterization supported by state-of-the art simulations both to guide the selection of processing parameters and to interpret the experimental results. The presentation will illustrate this with focus on laser powder bed fusion. Characterization is by electron microscopy and by non-destructive 3D X-ray diffraction, while simulations are by AM deposition-scale process models and materials models including Flow3D, PF and CPFEM. Specific case stories will be presented, including i) simulation-based process parameter selection for texture and grain structure tailoring in 316L, and ii) potential of high spatial resolution laboratory X-ray diffraction for characterization of the evolution of Si particles in AlSi10Mg during annealing.
