Bulk ultrafine-grained (UFG) and nanocrystalline (NC) metals possess drastically higher strength than their conventional coarse-grained (CG) counterparts, and are anticipated to have significantly enhanced irradiation tolerance owing to the role of grain boundaries. In this study, UFG and NC austenitic or ferritic steels were manufactured by equal-channel angular pressing and high-pressure torsion, respectively. Ion irradiation and neutron irradiation were performed to study irradiation behavior of the steels. Irradiation-induced dislocation loops in UFG and NC steels were significantly less than CG steels. Irradiation-induced hardening in UFG samples was reduced compared to CG ones. UFG and NC austenitic steels were more resistant to irradiation-induced polymorph phase transformation. Small grain sizes reduced irradiation-induced segregation and precipitation in steels. Irradiation-induced grain growth in UFG and NC steels was very limited. UFG and NC steels were more resistant to irradiation embrittlement. Neutron irradiation enhanced ductility of NC ferritic steel instead of embrittling it. |
