| Abstract Scope |
The extensive consumption of acidic/alkaline reagents and the slow kinetics make the CO2 mineralization using industrial mineral waste (IMW) impractical. Moreover, IMW is also considered a promising source of critical metals and other value-added products. In this work, we aimed to integrate the extraction of these value-added products with the CO2 mineralization process, making the overall process economically viable and energy efficient. Using steel-making slag, we achieved mineral carbonation under ambient conditions in NaOH–Na2CO3 solution, resulting in up to 33% Ca carbonation and ~84% Si leaching from the IMW. The leached Si was precipitated as value-added nano-silica using amino acid additives. Concurrently, ~26 % of Ti was leached into the basic solution, while Fe, Ni, Cr, and rare-earth elements were magnetically separated from the solid phase. This integrated energy-efficient approach provides a scalable pathway for CO₂ sequestration coupled with the valorization of IMW into high-value products and critical metals. |
