Abstract Scope |
Molten halide salts are being considered as coolants and fuel mediums for advanced nuclear fission reactors. Under these conditions, ionizing radiation fields can significantly alter the physical and chemical properties of the molten salt, potentially affecting a reactor's performance and lifespan. Despite these implications, our current understanding of these radiation-driven processes, particularly regarding iodine—a major fission product with challenging neutronic and physiological characteristics—is limited. To address this knowledge gap, new findings will be presented on the radiation-induced behavior of iodine in high-temperature molten salts. These insights were obtained using a combination of time-resolved and dose accumulation electron beam techniques along with in-situ spectroelectrochemical methods. |
