| Abstract Scope |
Iron impurity restricts aluminum recycling because its limited solubility in the Al matrix promotes formation of Fe-rich intermetallic compounds during solidification. In hypereutectic Al-Fe alloys, primary Fe-rich intermetallics form directly from the liquid, and their morphology is governed by local thermal and solute conditions. This work develops a phase-field model to investigate the non-equilibrium growth and shape evolution of primary Fe-rich intermetallics over a range of cooling rates. The model couples thermodynamic driving forces, solute diffusion, interfacial kinetics, and thermal histories to simulate intermetallic growth from the liquid. Simulations will evaluate the effects of cooling rate and undercooling on growth velocity, solute partitioning, interface stability, and shape selection. Particular attention will be given to morphology transitions associated with different thermal and solute undercooling conditions. The results will establish a framework linking solidification conditions to primary Fe-rich intermetallic morphology in hypereutectic Al–Fe alloys. |
