Abstract Scope As the steel making industry expands electric arc furnace (EAF) use, more scrap is anticipated to be recycled into new steels. Some of residual elements from EAF process have unknown effects on microstructure development and mechanical properties in automotive steels. In this study, microstructural analyses and application property tests were performed to better understand the effects of selected residual elements (Cu, Ni, Sn, N and S) on the product of cold rolled DP steels. For this purpose, laboratory steels were produced with the selected residual elements in ratios and quantities representative of EAF steelmaking capability and then subjected to microstructural characterization and various application tests (relating to tensile properties, fracture, hydrogen embrittlement, spot weldability). Hole expansion ratio and bendability were continuously decreased due to increased S content, which is known for its formation of nonmetallic inclusions.
