| Abstract Scope |
One important theme of Bill Weber’s research has been understanding the fundamental structure-chemistry-property relationship that governs the amorphization susceptibility of ceramics, including complex oxides. This is a theme we have also pursued. In this talk, I will provide a perspective in which the amorphization resistance of complex oxides is related to the metastability of phases and disordered structures and how the stored energy introduced via irradiation drives the materials past these metastable boundaries. I will also compare fluorite derivatives such as pyrochlores and bixbyites with spinels in which kinetic mechanisms provide enhanced recovery pathways. These results shed new light on the properties that control amorphization of these oxides under irradiation. |
