Abstract Scope |
Traditional gallium refining from Bayer liquor involves a complicated flow sheet with expensive and geopolitically restricted ion-exchange resins. These resins drive the unit economics of the process, and are poisoned by trace impurities in the liquor. Previous processes were more expensive or involved large quantities of toxic mercury. The high production cost and low trading volumes puts alumina refineries in a bind; they are hesitant to invest in Ga refining, only to face a saturated market making it unprofitable.

To address this challenge, Found Energy is developing a novel approach without resin/concentration steps, greatly simplifying the process. Past efforts have historically been hampered by poor efficiency, resulting in high electricity costs. Our approach addresses this challenge with new materials and system design. Preliminary results show promise on simulated Bayer liquor feedstocks and future plans include testing the system with real Bayer liquor through existing partnerships. |
