| Abstract Scope |
Applying ultrasound in chemicals and materials processing (or manufacturing) have been widely used in many scientific disciplines and industry. For example ultrasound enhanced catalysis, ultrasound liquid melt processing, ultrasonic liquid phase exfoliation of 2D materials, etc.
The fundamental understanding of the underlying physics has long been hindered by their highly transient and multi-scale nature. Here, we report some recent breakthroughs achieved through operando and real-time studies using the state-of-the-art ultrafast synchrotron X-ray and X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) based imaging and microscopy, operated from a few tens of thousands to a few Megahertz (MHz) frame rate.
We systematically elucidate the underlying physics governing ultrasound-matter interactions, specifically focusing on the synergistic roles of ultrasonic cavitation, shockwaves, and acoustic streaming in liquid phase exfoliation of 2D materials. We also discuss and envisage the future directions. |
