| Abstract Scope |
Secondary aluminum melting in reverberatory furnaces is critical to meeting growing demand for low-carbon aluminum, as recycled scrap requires only 5–10% of the energy needed for primary production. Producers have a substantial opportunity to further improve operations by increasing production rates, reducing fuel usage, processing more contaminated scrap, and improving metal yield. This paper presents how the combination of novel oxy-fuel burner technology with moving flames, low-emission melting technology, and smart combustion controls can deliver these benefits. Next-generation smart oxy-fuel burners direct and modulate flames for uniform heat transfer and a controlled atmosphere near the melt surface, reducing flame impingement and oxidation losses and improving fuel usage and related CO2 emissions. Low-emission melting technology enables producers to process more contaminated/low-quality scrap. Smart sensors and feedback control optimize combustion in real time throughout the melting cycle. Field data and modeling results are presented that demonstrate this wide range of benefits. |
