| Abstract Scope |
Chromium coatings deposited using cold spray technology have been investigated for improving accident tolerance of the control rod assembly in pressurized water reactors. The control rod regulates the nuclear fission reaction in the reactor core. The component targeted for coating was the austenitic stainless-steel tubular sheath that houses the neutron absorbers and itself is free to move vertically in a zirconium-alloy guide tube. The study demonstrated the efficacy of the Cr coating as a diffusion barrier between the sheath and guide tube materials in the event of inadvertent contact at high temperatures which can otherwise lead to Fe-Zr eutectic melting. The coating retained its integrity in 1200ºC steam oxidation tests and there was no observable oxygen ingress into the coating or undercoating corrosion. Thermo-mechanical modeling supported by experiments showed that the coating can sustain the stresses during quenching from high temperatures as would be the case in a reflood scenario. |
