Abstract Scope |
For the aluminum industry to fully unlock secondary aluminum in automotive grades the formation of mechanically inhibiting intermetallic phases must be better understood. Recycling leads to increased Fe and Si impurities causing elevated volume fractions of Al-Fe-Si Intermetallics (IMs) adversely impacting the final product’s ductility-related properties, including formability. Moreover, the different morphologies of IM particles provide varying formability related properties. We present a solidification path experiment in which the heat of formation for different IMs is detected for Al-Fe-Si-Mn alloys to rapidly identify the presence of IM particles. Through solidification paths, we capture the latent heat rejection of IM particles, including mechanically detrimental β-AlFeSi. Chemical analysis of Si to Fe, Mn atomic ratios through SEM EDS mapping confirms the solidification experiments’ findings. |
