Abstract Scope |
Glass recycling typically involves clean soda-lime cullet. 'Waste' glass, including contaminated or differently formulated cullet, is often landfilled. Another form of 'unrecycled' glass comes from melting inorganic waste like slags, ashes, and mining tailings.
This study shows that fine glass powders can create cementitious matrices through activation with diluted NaOH solutions (<3M) and drying at 40-80 °C, potentially aided by microwave heating. The key process is the welding of adjacent particles via condensation of SiOH and AlOH surface groups, forming a 3D glass skeleton filled with gel derived from dissolved glass components.
CaO and Al2O3-rich waste glasses benefit from improved gel stability, enabling the creation of highly porous bodies with various functionalities, from thermal insulation to wastewater filtration.
This approach offers a sustainable solution for recycling diverse glass waste, reducing landfill use and creating valuable materials for various applications. |
