| Abstract Scope |
At high burnup, UO₂ nuclear fuel undergoes restructuring in which the original grains subdivide into submicron subgrains, forming distinct microstructures in different radial regions of the fuel pellet. This restructuring significantly influences fuel performance, yet capturing its microstructural evolution remains challenging.
In this work, we employ a mesoscale phase-field model to study grain restructuring in high-burnup UO₂. The model represents subgrain formation together with burnup-driven microstructural evolution and is used to examine how local conditions, such as fission products and burnup, influence the resulting grain structure. We investigate restructuring across different radial zones of the fuel and compare the simulated grain morphologies and size trends with experimental observations.
The results demonstrate that mesoscale phase-field simulations can reproduce key characteristics of restructured high-burnup fuel and generate representative microstructures for distinct radial regions. This provides a basis for relating microstructural evolution to fuel behavior and for informing engineering-scale fuel performance analysis. |
