High temperature superconducting (HTS) rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) magnets are critical components in compact fusion reactors and space applications. In radiation environments, degradation resulting from high-energy particle exposure, caused by defect production and evolution, determines the usable lifetime of the HTS. Multiscale computational modeling, combining density functional theory (DFT), molecular dynamics (MD), and kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations, is deployed to examine the microstructural evolution of irradiated yttrium barium copper oxide-coated conductors (YBCO-CCs). At the electronic scale, DFT calculations predict the energetics of point defects in bulk YBCO and at the YBCO-silver (YBCO/Ag) interface. The interface studies evaluate the stability of superconducting tapes under irradiation. At the atomic scale, MD simulations investigate the fundamental formation mechanisms of irradiation damage in YBCO during collision cascades. Finally, KMC simulations track the long-term annealing dynamics of these defects. This integrated multiscale framework reveals the underlying mechanisms governing YBCO superconductivity under irradiation. |
