| Abstract Scope |
Recently, a novel molten salt electrolysis using a high-density cathode such as Cu or Sn has been investigated for the reduction of MgO to Mg. In this study, novel molten salt electrolysis of MgO using a lightweight cathode such as Al metal and a graphite anode was developed for the direct production of Mg – Al alloys. MgO was electrolyzed in a MgF2 – LiF – CaF2 molten salt under an Ar atmosphere at 1053 K, using a cathodic current density of 0.318 A/cm2 for 2.5 – 5.5 h. After electrolysis, 18.6 mass% Mg – Al alloys composed of the Mg2Al3 and Al (Mg) mixture were obtained, and a current efficiency of 90.3 % was achieved under certain conditions. These results demonstrate that the proposed electrolytic process using an Al cathode is effective for directly producing Mg – Al alloys from MgO. |
