| Abstract Scope |
The increasing use of post-consumer scrap (PCS) in wrought aluminum production requires not only reliable chemical analysis but also robust methods for evaluating scrap-stream quality. This study investigated the compositional stability of certified single-alloy AA6082 scrap streams supplied by three industrial suppliers using Spark-OES incoming inspection data. Approximately thirty successive lots from each supplier were statistically evaluated and compared with the repeatability and measurement uncertainty of the analytical system. The results demonstrated pronounced supplier-dependent differences in compositional stability despite identical nominal alloy declarations. Scrap streams with higher levels of traceability exhibited lower variability and greater industrial consistency. Since analytical uncertainty was significantly lower than the observed lot-to-lot variability, the measured fluctuations originated primarily from the scrap streams themselves. The results indicate that industrial qualification of post-consumer scrap should extend beyond the chemical composition of individual deliveries and include the long-term continuity of scrap streams as a basis for achieving consistent alloy quality and improved production economics. |
