Abstract Scope Despite the promise of Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) there are outstanding concerns, including spatial variations in microstructure and fatigue properties of metal printed across the build volume. This talk will focus on the variability in finite-life fatigue properties of Grade 5 Ti6Al4V. Printing was performed by multiple partners according to a round robin approach, all operating the same model commercial printer and the same powder. The objective is to quantify the variation in fatigue properties, and the prevailing sources of variability based on the process physics. Here, the distribution in fatigue properties is correlated with measures of gas flow and the emission of spatter. Results show that there are spatial variations in the fatigue life distribution and that they are primarily caused by specific anomalies that serve as root causes. Details regarding their distribution will be discussed as well as the effects of post-processing by hot isostatic pressing (HIP).
