Abstract Scope |
Gradient heterostructures offer an effective strategy for tuning mechanical properties in structural alloys. In this work, a gradient microstructure was developed in T91 ferritic/martensitic steel via surface mechanical grinding treatment, producing a continuous microstructure transition from surface nanolaminates to coarse grain interiors. In situ SEM micropillar compression tests revealed spatially dependent mechanical responses, with enhanced work hardening and pronounced back stress arising from gradient microstructures. Post-deformation transmission electron microscopy analyses identified distinct deformation mechanisms across the gradient microstructures. These findings demonstrate the potential of using gradient architectures to optimize strength–ductility synergy in nuclear reactor steels. |
