| Abstract Scope |
Adherence to professional codes of conduct and ethical standards are core competencies for modern engineers. Ethics, however, is often taught in isolation from the technical content that dominates engineering curriculum. This separation, especially when reinforced by non-engineer guest lectures, can foster the misconception that ethical decision making is the domain of ethics and compliance specialists, rather than a daily responsibility of practicing engineers. In this lightning talk, we introduce an ethics module developed for a graduate level materials selection course. Designed to integrate directly with the course’s systematic selection methodology, the module introduces key concepts of ethical decision making and tasks students with authoring a case study to reinforce that subject matter expertise in materials is often more crucial than extensive knowledge of ethical theory in recognizing ethical challenges and making informed judgements in engineering practice. |
