There has been a growing interest in Mg based biodegradable implants due to its extraordinary advantages. However, the major challenge in designing the implant is the balance between bone healing and Mg biodegradation, which remains unconquered. Computational models are an effective tool in the swift development of such implants.
In this work we propose a phenomenological model coupling the bone healing and Mg biodegradation. The mechanical properties of the magnesium alloy were experimentally investigated and were subsequently modelled via elasto-plastic model. A damage variable was introduced to simulate the degradation resulting in a change of the mechanical properties and geometry. The bone healing was modelled by updating the bone density and its Young's modulus based on the mechanical stimulus. The bone healing and degradation were then coupled on the same timeline to simulate the whole process. The developed framework can help in the prediction of optimal design for bone implants. |
