| Abstract Scope |
Soft-phase-reinforced metal matrix composites provide an effective alternative to hard-reinforced composites by improving load-transfer efficiency. However, fabrication of Al–Sn composites through conventional liquid-state processing is limited by the immiscibility and density difference between Al and Sn, causing reinforcement segregation and inferior properties. In this study, Al–Sn surface composites are fabricated using friction stir processing (FSP), a solid-state technique that overcomes these challenges. The effect of tool pin profile on Sn distribution, microstructure, hardness, tribological behavior, and electrochemical performance is investigated. The square pin profile produced a uniform Sn distribution with significant grain refinement, resulting in improved surface hardness. The results also show that the Sn provides lubrication effect, and improves the wear resistance. In addition, Sn as soft-reinforcement improves the electrochemical activities and pitting resistance. These findings demonstrate that FSP enables fabrication of Al–Sn composites with tailored surface properties for tribological and Al–air battery applications. |
