Abstract Scope |
By employing a high-absorption energy source, electron beam powder bed fusion (EB-PBF) has become one of the emerging additive manufacturing (AM) methods in recent years. The spot melting technique, derived from its none-inertia deflection speed, has been a unique feature that can only be found in EB-PBF. While this spot melting technique opens many unexplored regimes for microstructure control in AM-based metals, an in-situ metallographic method is revealed by this method. Here first demonstrated its capabilities to expose the microstructure of Ti-6Al-4V material concurrently while spot-melting a layer. This method is unique in its ability to reveal a metal’s microstructure without employing traditional metallographic methods such as grinding, and macro- or micro-polishing. Intensive texture, microstructural, and image analyses are conducted to demonstrate the relationship between this approach and the conventional method. The collected data serves as a valuable source for the prediction of texture and microstructure, paving the way for an accelerated metallurgical examination of materials produced by EB-PBF. |
