| Abstract Scope |
Multi-principal element ceramics emerged as promising material for hypersonic applications due to their ability to operate at extreme temperatures and harsh operating environments. In the current study a multi-principal cation (Hf, Zr, Nb and Ta) was mixed with BCN anion through polymer route to achieve controlled composition and atomic-level mixing. The materials were heat treated at elevated temperatures under N2 atmosphere to facilitate ceramic conversion and phase development. The resulting structure was assessed through X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, which showed progressive crystallization and improved elemental homogeneity over the temperature range ranging from 1200 ᵒC to 1700 ᵒC. These results suggest that polymer derived MBCN ceramics are promising candidates for hypersonic leading edges, thermal protection systems and other ultra-high temperature aerospace components. |
