Abstract Scope |
Increasing the usage of recycled aluminum is an efficient way to maintain a low-carbon supply-chain for modern automobile companies, where the major challenge is the mitigation of the negative effect of tramp element, such as Fe. This paper aims at the application scenario of recycled aluminum in automobile profiles, presenting a thorough investigation on the morphology, size, and fraction of Fe-containing Intermetallic Compounds (IMCs) in an Al-Mg-Si alloy with excess Fe contents. It is showed that the fraction and morphology of the Fe-containing IMCs in as-cast microstructure depends on Mn content and Mn/Fe content ratio, respectively. The cooling rate in solidification has decisive impact on the size and fraction of the IMCs and this impact is inherited in the homogenized structures. Based on the understanding of the evolution of the IMCs in casting, homogenization, compression/extrusion, and aging, a through-process adjustment strategy to mitigate the negative effect of Fe was proposed. |
