Zirconium carbide (ZrC) is a high temperature ceramic material that are proposed as insulators within nuclear thermal propulsion reactors. The ZrC materials studied here were fabricated by binder jet printing, then exposed to hydrogen gas (H2) at temperatures up to 2800 K. The samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and solid-state 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (SS NMR) spectroscopy before and after H2 exposure to evaluate the microstructure and any H2 absorption. The XRD data shows that no secondary phases are formed, although there in an increase in microstrain within the lattice, indicating some absorption of hydrogen. The SS 1H and 13C NMR results show the presence of metal hydride environments and the formation of carbon vacancies, which increase with time and temperature. Thermal diffusivity was measured on these samples and shows variation in the diffusivity, which is attributed to the carbon vacancy formation during heat treatment. |
