Abstract Scope |
Bioactive coating materials are of great interest for enhancing chemical bonding with damaged tissues and promoting osteointegration on load-bearing metals, yet the compositional development of glass coatings remains limited. Herein, a series of ZrO2-containing bioactive glasses were fabricated and deposited on the well-known bioinert Ti6Al4V implants, achieving excellent interface strength by incorporating a cost-effective spin-coating method. The specific sintering conditions were developed for these single- and double-layer glass coatings with controllable morphologies, including the cross-linked reticular bodies and compacted layers as strong as the bulk glass. Prominently, single-layer glass coatings offer valuable insight into heat treatment processes without inducing mechanical failures to the Ti6Al4V substrates while also showing corrosion resistance in simulated body fluids. The double-layer glass-coated implant maintains these advantages while improving surface roughness and in vitro bioactivity, attributed to the small amount of ZrO2 incorporated into the glass, which has been proven to benefit glass dissolution behaviors. |
