Abstract Scope |
Laser powder bed fusion is an additive manufacturing technology that produces metallic parts with complex micro-/defect structures, which often influence the parts fatigue performance. Investigation of these micro-/defect-structures via traditional characterization methods like scanning electron microscopy offers limited two-dimensional insights and is destructive. Laboratory diffraction contrast tomography (LabDCT), integrated on an X-ray computed tomography machine, offers a nondestructive way of capturing three-dimensional (3D) grain maps of polycrystalline materials. This study investigates the application of LabDCT as a non-destructive alternative for 3D characterization of micro-/defect-structures in AM parts. Using laser powder bed fused Inconel 718 miniature specimens, this study evaluates the effects of varying imaging parameters, including lens configurations and detector types, on the accuracy and resolution of grain and defect mapping via LabDCT. |
