| Abstract Scope |
Ultra-fast laser sintering enables rapid material processing through highly localized energy delivery over extremely short timescales, allowing precise control of densification. Silicon carbide (SiC) combined with rare-earth oxides such as yttrium disilicate (Y₂Si₂O₇) and gadolinium zirconate (Gd₂Zr₂O₇) is widely studied for environmental and thermal barrier coatings (EBC/TBCs) in high-temperature turbine applications. However, their behavior under ultra-fast laser processing remains insufficiently understood.
In this study, SiC–oxide composite coatings are fabricated via a slurry-based method and patterned into a 10 × 10 microarray of 500 µm × 500 µm squares within a 5 mm × 5 mm region. The samples are processed using a 10.6 µm CO₂ laser under an inert atmosphere.
Microscopy reveals clear spatial variations in densification, with central regions exhibiting greater consolidation due to higher local energy input. These results highlight the role of laser energy distribution in controlling densification during ultra-fast processing. |
