| Abstract Scope |
An innovative direct electrochemical route for metallic manganese production is demonstrated via molten salt electrolysis in a NaCl-CaCl₂ melt at 750 °C, utilizing a carbonate-derived MnO precursor. Electrochemical characterization reveals a single-step, two-electron reduction (Mn(II) → Mn(0)), in contrast to the multistep pathways typical of oxide reduction. The electrochemical stability window of the salt, combined with the reduction behavior of Ca²⁺, enables selective MnO reduction without concurrent salt decomposition. Addition of CaO confirms the melt's capacity to transport oxygen ions during reduction. Physical immersion analysis shows pellet stability with no dissolution or degradation. Voltage-controlled electrolysis demonstrates complete MnO-to-Mn conversion. Time-dependent studies reveal a three-phase interline-controlled deoxygenation mechanism and establish oxygen vacancy formation as the dominant reduction mechanism. Theoretical calculations confirm that oxygen vacancies reduce the MnO bandgap, supporting the observed gradual reduction. This work establishes a simplified and controlled framework for metal recovery from complex oxides in molten salt. |
