| Abstract Scope |
Fission, fusion and spallation environments involve a wide range of concurrent displacement damage and transmutation phenomena. This presentation will discuss some of the key synergies of solid and gaseous transmutation products with displacement damage in materials. Helium effects on cavity swelling are relatively well understood, whereas knowledge of solid and gaseous transmutation solute effects on the overall irradiated microstructural evolution and physical and mechanical properties is incomplete. This is due in part to uncertainties in point defect trap binding energies. A related issue in ion irradiation studies is determination of the species-dependent implanted ion concentration that does not introduce artifacts in the midrange ion-irradiated region adjacent to the implanted-ion zone. Examples of utilization of advanced characterization tools for unraveling synergistic effects of transmutant or implanted ions on irradiated microstructural evolution and the associated mechanical and physical properties will be presented. |
