Abstract Scope Erosion or hot corrosion can take place in engine valvetrain components under a combustion leakage which can affect wear performance of valvetrain system and/or cause engine valvetrain failure. Erosion resistance of different VSI alloys was investigated with both field engine run parts and laboratory tested samples. A significant number of metallographic and fractographic examinations were carried out using OLM and SEM to characterize the hot corrosion morphology for various high temperature alloys. The info from metallographic and fractographic examination was adopted for development of a laboratory-type erosion test method. During this investigation, a correlation between hot hardness and hot corrosion susceptibility was made besides the compositional and microstructural factors. Further, potential correlation between hot corrosion and wear behavior of valvetrain components was explored. The hot corrosion info obtained can be also useful for similar engineering applications at elevated temperatures.
