| Abstract Scope |
Magnetic Shape Memory Alloys (MSMAs) exhibit magnetic field-induced strain (MFIS) whose magnitude depends strongly on grain and pore microstructure, as well as on defects. Single-crystalline Ni-Mn-Ga typically shows MFIS exceeding 10%, whereas polycrystalline material generally exhibits negligible MFIS because grain boundaries constrain twin boundary motion. Defects such as impurities and surface roughness further reduce functionality. This talk reviews the current state of powder metallurgical manufacturing methods for MSMAs, including additive manufacturing, and compares the resulting microstructures and properties to those achieved by traditional routes such as casting and single-crystal growth. Manufacturing and post-processing strategies for producing beneficial microstructures – and thereby improving functional properties - are discussed, including approaches to control porosity, grain size, texture, and defect content. Emphasis is placed on identifying process-microstructure-property relationships that can guide development of powder-based MSMA components with enhanced MFIS for actuator and sensor applications. |
