| Abstract Scope |
Molten salt reactors (MSR) are considered as promising candidates for next-generation nuclear systems, offering high thermal efficiency and actinides recycling. Since the 2010s, chloride-based salts have attracted increasing interest due to their fast neutron spectrum, enabling the fission of minor actinides. In France, a reactor concept is under development to transmute plutonium and americium using a NaCl–MgCl2 salt at 550 °C.
However, corrosion of structural materials remains a major challenge to ensure integrity and long-term operation of MSR. The impurity impact such as sulphur (coming from 35Cl- irradiation) has to be also studied.
In this work, the electrochemical behaviour of S- was investigated under argon atmosphere in molten NaCl–MgCl2 system between 550 and 700 °C using cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry. S2- oxidation mechanism was examined, showing that S2- oxidation into S was a single-step and diffusion-controlled process. The solubility of S2- was also studied. These results shown that S2- species remain stable at low concentration in NaCl–MgCl2. |
