| Abstract Scope |
Polymer-coated alumina feedstocks provide an alternative to conventional powder–polymer admixing by establishing the polymer–particle structure before melt processing. Previous work demonstrated improved rheological flow behavior of polymer-coated alumina–polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) feedstocks compared with conventional admixed systems. However, their behavior during melt mixing has not been fully investigated. In this study, polymer-coated and conventionally admixed alumina–PBT feedstocks were compared using torque rheometry. Torque–time responses were analyzed to compare mixing behavior, while totalized torque was used as a complementary measure of overall mixing resistance. Polymer-coated feedstocks showed different mixing behavior with lower mixing resistance compared with conventional admixes. Density measurements, pellet morphology, and scanning electron microscopy were used to relate the processing behavior to differences in particle–polymer structure. These results show that polymer coating influences both the flow and mixing behavior of ceramic feedstocks. |
