Abstract Scope |
Tagging of nuclear materials through slight changes in chemical composition is one way to create a unique signature for tracking and traceability without compromising reactor safety. Initial efforts investigated Ni, Ti, Sn, Zr, and Ce additions to U-10Mo fuel. From these efforts the additions were down selected to Ni and Ti. Three alloys were vacuum induction melted with differing ratios of Ti/Ni to assess the prominence of the taggant as well as assess its influence on the manufacturing process. Generally, the taggants could be detected through chemical analysis, however microstructural analysis revealed second phase particles were not always taggant rich. The alloys were also taken through several downstream processing steps, including homogenization, hot rolling, and cold rolling. Based on current efforts, the taggants are not believed to influence the manufacturing process of U-10Mo metallic fuels. |
