| Abstract Scope |
World steel production is approximately 2 billion tons annually. The predominant use of carbothermal methods significantly impacts the increase in global CO2 emissions, with literature indicating that 7-9% of global CO2 emissions originate from steel production. To reduce these high emission values, the steel industry is turning to alternative, environmentally friendly production methods such as utilization of hydrogen as a reductant instead of carbon-based agents. Current sources indicate that reduction with green hydrogen for steel production can reduce CO2 emissions by 80%. Furthermore, iron slag is one of the most important wastes generated in steel production, causes both environmental and economic losses when stored without any processing. A significant portion of the total slag generated originates from EAF facilities. Consequently, optimization of the reduction of iron oxide to iron in EAF slags using hydrogen gas is critical in terms of the economical use of raw material resources and waste reduction. |
