| Abstract Scope |
Liquid-metal dealloying and molten-salt dealloying involve distinct reaction media, yet both can produce closely related morphological transitions. Here, we compare temperature-dependent dealloying behavior in Fe-Ni alloys exposed to liquid metal and Ni-20Cr alloys exposed to chloride molten salts. At lower temperatures, dealloying is dominated by localized intergranular penetration and attack, whereas increasing temperature promotes diffusion and the development of bicontinuous porous structures. The comparison highlights the competing roles of reaction kinetics, grain-boundary transport, bulk diffusion, and interfacial diffusion in determining the resulting morphology. We will also discuss the conditions under which bicontinuous structures form despite apparent deviations from conventional parting-limit requirements. By examining similarities and differences between the two systems, this work seeks to identify common kinetic and mechanistic factors governing the transition from intergranular corrosion-like behavior to bulk dealloying and to establish a foundation for future predictive descriptions of morphology selection. |
