| Abstract Scope |
A nanocrystalline grain structure in copper can be stabilized by dilute alloying. The incorporation of insoluble species into the matrix by, e.g., mechanical alloying, can result in the formation of a fine dispersion during subsequent processing. This dispersion can (1) prevent grain coarsening via the Zener pinning effect and (2) influence the elevated temperature yield strength via second-phase strengthening. In this work, we examine the second-phase particles in dilute Cu-Nb and Cu-Hf alloys, including interactions with contaminant species, resultant interfacial coherencies, grain size stability, and effects on yield strength. These findings are compared to reports of dilute Cu-Ta alloys to provide a broad look at alloying effects in nanocrystalline copper. |
