| Abstract Scope |
Refractory ceramic block has been used as the liner material in glass vitrification furnaces for years. Nuclear waste glass melter liners are generally designed based on corrosion estimates obtained from crucible-scale laboratory testing as limited data exists from operational melters. However, estimates from accelerated laboratory tests are known to be conservative in comparison to the service life of existent melters. Nonetheless, laboratory tests are critical to understanding predominant corrosion mechanisms in order to reduce uncertainty and mimic in-service melter liner refractory corrosion and refine predictions of the melter liner service life. Test results will be used to facilitate predictive modeling of melter liner service life, which directly influences the long-term cost of nuclear waste vitrification. This work will present testing results in support of ongoing efforts to understand refractory corrosion across an expanded glass composition region for glasses to be processed through the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. |
