| Abstract Scope |
In the era of sustainable development, achieving high energy density is a central objective in advancing next-generation energy storage systems. Magnesium–air batteries offer significant advantages, including high specific energy, low cost, and potential for rapid mechanical recharging. However, challenges related to the electrochemical behavior of magnesium in aqueous environments limit their practical application. During discharge, alongside the primary electrochemical reactions, parasitic processes occur, including the formation of a Mg(OH)₂ layer on the anode surface and hydrogen evolution caused by polarization and self-corrosion. These processes reduce battery stability and efficiency. In addition, a substantial gap exists between laboratory-scale studies and real-world implementation. This study investigates the effects of cell geometry, electrolyte composition, and discharge conditions on hydrogen evolution and overall performance. The relationship between hydrogen evolution processes and the performance of the electrochemical system will be discussed in detail. |
