| Abstract Scope |
Laser Directed Energy Deposition (L-DED) processed Titanium alloys can be significantly influenced by oxygen content in the alloy composition. Oxygen contamination could be contributed by trace impurities during powder manufacturing, powder handling or by oxygen absorption through melt pool during DED processing. Large amounts of oxygen pickup in metastable beta Ti alloys such as Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr (Ti-5553) may lead to severe embrittlement. In this study, Yttrium is introduced into the Ti-5553 composition by mixing Ti-5553 powder with elemental yttrium. Influence of yttrium addition on melt pool solidification, microstructure and tensile performance were analyzed. |
