About this Abstract

Meeting MS&T25: Materials Science & Technology
Symposium Advances and Challenges in Decarbonization of the Steel Industry
Presentation Title Practical Routes to Industrial Decarbonization in North American Integrated Iron and Steel Production
Author(s) Richard Hiernaux, Stuart Street, Donald Zuke, Roger Westcott, John Hill
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Richard Hiernaux
Abstract Scope There is a large and growing volume of work on greenhouse gas reduction in the iron and steel industry. Little has been published, however, on full-scale industrial trials or activities that have been adopted into regular operating practice. This paper reviews the collective efforts at Cleveland-Cliffs to reduce its greenhouse gas footprint to 27% lower than the comparable integrated steel global average. Topics discussed include HBI consumption, maximization of natural gas injection, full-scale bast furnace hydrogen injection trials, maximization of BOF scrap rates, and greening of the electrical grid.
