| Abstract Scope |
Silicon steel (electrical steel) is widely used as a core material for motors and transformers due to its excellent soft magnetic properties. However, the presence of surface defects can severely degrade the electromagnetic performance of the final products. A primary cause of these defects is the entrapment of non-metallic inclusions at the solid-liquid interface during solidification. Therefore, understanding inclusion behavior at the solidification interface is crucial for improving product quality. Among various factors, the interfacial tension gradient—induced by redistribution of surface-active elements—critically influences inclusion behavior during solidification. In this study, the real-time behavior of non-metallic inclusions at the solidification interface of silicon steel was investigated using high-temperature confocal laser scanning microscopy (HT-CLSM). By varying the concentrations of surface-active elements, the transient motion and entrapment criteria of inclusions were analyzed. The present results provide fundamental insights into controlling inclusion entrapment and optimizing the solidification process of high-performance silicon steels. |
