Abstract Scope |
Directional solidification via Bridgman furnace is a cornerstone of solidification science, allowing for precise and independent control of interface velocity and thermal gradient. However, ground-based experiments are still influenced by gravity-induced buoyancy and convection. By melting and solidifying in microgravity, purely diffusive conditions can be achieved, providing experimental insight into fundamental material physics that can be obtained in no other way. Prof. Voorhees has been a leading researcher and advocate for microgravity materials science across multiple decades. This talk will reflect on how the experimental methods and microstructural characterization techniques that I learned as a graduate student in the Voorhees lab allowed me to develop my own successful research program based on directional solidification, including participation in a long-running ESA collaboration investigating pattern formation and microstructure evolution in complex eutectics. |
