Abstract Scope |
Multiple combinations of metal oxide sytems with up to 5 components were prepared to obtain rock salt high-entropy oxides (HEOs). The mechanical behavior of this novel class of materials remains poorly understood. In the present study, HEO (CoCuMgNiZn)O and the individual oxides were prepared using pressureless sintering. The densification behavior, microstructures, and mechanical properties of HEO are compared with constituent binary oxides. Hardness, elastic moduli, and fracture toughness were measured using nanoindentation and single-edge notched bend test. Observed mechanical behavior was correlated with the structure and microstructure of the HEO, as well as with the roles of individual cations and factors such as lattice distortion and bonding. |
