High-entropy alloys (HEAs) such as the six-element AlCoCrMnVTi system are promising candidates for extreme radiation and thermal shock environments. This includes next-generation multimegawatt particle accelerators, where reliable bulk hardness is essential for materials design and screening. Indentation size effect (ISE) models, such as Nix-Gao and its variants, extract bulk hardness from depth-dependent nanoindentation data. However, no single ISE model is universally valid across materials, deformation mechanisms, or damage states, especially for novel AlCoCrMnVTi HEAs. This study systematically evaluates candidate ISE models for pristine and ion-irradiated HEAs. We integrate Nix–Gao, modified Nix–Gao, and irradiated-layer mechanistic hardness models, first validating them on standard materials (silica, aluminum, and stainless steel) to benchmark fitting robustness and establish valid depth ranges. These validated models are then applied to the targeted HEAs, and by comparing model performance across irradiation conditions, we identify the most suitable ISE model for these HEAs. |
