| Abstract Scope |
Polylactic acid was evaluated as a biomaterial for temporary medical devices due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and suitability for additive manufacturing. Specimens were fabricated by three-dimensional (3D) printing with controlled geometry to investigate the effects of water absorption on the mechanical behavior and microstructure of the material. Water absorption was determined from the mass variation of the specimens after immersion in an aqueous medium for different periods. Mechanical performance was assessed by impact testing to evaluate the material's energy absorption capacity after moisture exposure. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize the fracture surfaces and identify defects associated with the printing process and water-induced microstructural changes. The results showed that water absorption affected the impact behavior and fracture morphology of PLA. The combined use of water absorption, impact testing, and SEM provided a comprehensive evaluation of the durability and performance of additively manufactured PLA for temporary medical device applications. |
