| Abstract Scope |
Initiatives for development of high strength light-weight alloys, particularly those that perform well at elevated temperatures continue for both aerospace and commercial uses. The promise of increasing supplies and falling prices have catalyzed a new wave of interest. Critical to this effort is the availability of aluminum master alloys with higher percentages of Sc, making alloying more economical. The formation of the SCORE [Supply Chains of Recovered Elements] consortium has been working to create a domestic supply of scandium from waste streams in the United States along with a customer base to support its use. This presentation will review current developments in scandium use in product forms as diverse as casting, various forms of additive manufacturing and wrought products. Recent studies in the use of complementary alloying elements and unique thermal treatments will be presented along with potential use cases. |
