| Abstract Scope |
Alumina concentration in aluminium reduction cells is hard to measure online, whereas cell voltage and zone currents are continuously available. For a 500 kA cell, this paper develops a dynamic alumina soft-sensing model coupling an equivalent circuit with reduced-order, CFD-derived mass transport. The cell is divided into six zones (matching the current-measurement layout), each split into A/B sub-cells. Each sub-cell concentration is governed by feeding, Faraday consumption, and a mass transfer matrix. Concentration affects cell voltage through three paths — reversible potential, electrolyte conductivity, and inter-electrode resistance — forming a mechanistic concentration-to-voltage chain. The equivalent anode–cathode distance is calibrated from plant data. The computed voltage agrees with the low-frequency component of the measured voltage in amplitude and trend, indicating model self-consistency. Based on measured zone currents and feeding information, the model yields spatially non-uniform alumina concentration across zones, and offers a reduced-order approach for alumina soft-sensing and zone-imbalance analysis. |
